SILCHAR: The Crime Branch of the State Police is likely to interrogate two former SPs of Cachar for their alleged role in illegal Burmese betel nut trade, hinted a source in the Crime Branch.

The arrested 'supari' mafia from Barak Valley reportedly confessed before the investigating officers of the Crime Branch that at least four MLAs, both from the ruling and the opposition, used to provide them political shelter. A detailed report of the confession of the arrested mafioso and that of the in-charge officers of ten police stations and outposts of Cachar is under preparation. The police will send the report to the Chief Minister. The bank details and other properties of the suspected police officials are under scrutiny.

The Cachar police continued its search operation against the supari mafia last night. The police arrested Haji Nizamuddin and his son Ali Ahmed from their palatial residence at Nayagaon, Kalain yesterday. The Cachar SP said that Nizam had tried to flee from the running car of the police. Police opened fire at him, and his left leg got wounded. Nijam is in Silchar Medical College & Hospital.

On Friday night, the police arrested five other suspected mafia members.
