GUWAHATI: As many as 69 people died of the COVID-19 in the tea garden areas of Assam till June 6 in the second wave. Speaking to The Sentinel, NHM (National Health Mission) Mission Director Dr Lakshmanan S said, "The COVID-19 situation in the tea gardens has improved slightly even though the tea garden areas are densely populated".
According to official sources, a total of 10,115 COVID-19 positive cases were reported from the 781 tea gardens in the 33 districts of Assam. Dibrugarh topped the list with 2,388 COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths. It is followed by Tinsukia with 1,338 positive cases and 17 deaths. Dibrugarh also has the maximum number of tea gardens at 146 followed by Tinsukia with 121 gardens.
Golaghat recorded 1,067 cases and 6 deaths. The district has 79 tea gardens. Sonitpur with 38 tea gardens reported 802 cases, no deaths. Jorhat with 86 tea gardens reported 522 cases and 3 deaths. Udalguri with 24 tea gardens reported 515 cases and 5 deaths.
A total of 482 containment zones were declared, the maximum number of 417 being in Sivasagar that has 421 positive cases and four deaths in 27 tea gardens.
