4 Assam officials among 9 given imprisonment terms by CBI Court

NEW DELHI: A CBI Court on Thursday announced three years imprisonment to nine accused including a former Deputy Secretary of Assam government for misappropriation of a huge amount of money.

The Special Judge has sentenced Jiauddin Ahmed, then Deputy Secretary, Veterinary Secretariat Assam; Jugal Chandra Saikia, then Director, Veterinary Directorate, Guwahati; Harekrishna Das, then Store Keeper, ICDP, Howly, Veterinary Directorate; and M Rahman, then Accountant, ICDP, Howly, Veterinary Directorate; to undergo three years simple imprisonment with fine of Rs 50,000 on each count.

The Court also said that private persons including UN Gogoi, Kamlesh Deka — both partners in M/s G&B Enterprises & Co, Guwahati; Pallabh Bardoloi, proprietor, M/s Jyoti Pharma Guwahati; Arup Baishya, proprietor, M/s BB Associates Guwahati; and Amar Jyoti Bezbarua, proprietor, M/s Assam Drug House, Guwahati, M/s Imperial Equipments and M/s Drug Sea to undergo three years simple imprisonment with fine of Rs 25,000 on each count.

Officials said that the CBI had registered this case in 1994 u/s 120B, 420, 467, 471, 477A, 201 of IPC and u/s 13(2) r/w 13(1) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act 1988 against the accused.

It was alleged that the officials working in the Office of District Veterinary, Barpeta and Howly, entered into a criminal conspiracy with the suppliers for cheating the Government of Assam through its Veterinary Department; and in furtherance of the said criminal conspiracy they misappropriated an amount of Rs 1,21,35,879.13 (approximately) on false LoCs, Sanction Orders and bills pertaining to purchase of veterinary medicines.

After investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet in 1997 against the accused. The Trial Court found the accused guilty and convicted them.
