40,000 schools provided tap water connections: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: “The water that is provided through Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is safe for drinking, unlike the water which we get through wells, tubewells and handpumps. This will help prevent various water-borne diseases,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today in Nalbari. He said that people who have wells, tubewells and handpumps are often not keen to get tap water supply. While addressing this issue, the Chief Minister reiterated that JJM was launched to provide safe water supply to households.

The Chief Minister attended a Sanmilan of all JJM stakeholders in Nalbari today. Such Sanmilans will be organized in other districts as well. During the Sanmilan, he unveiled the Jal Kosh QR code which will publicize local information regarding JJM.

Addressing the Sanmilan, Sarma said, “The Assam Government had set a target of providing tap water supply connections to 44,000 schools and so far 40,000 schools have been provided tap water connections under JJM. While the target is to provide water connections in 36,000 Anganwadi centres, 32,000 such centres have been provided water connections. Assam has achieved 50% of its JJM target. A total of 48 lakh households in the State have been provided water connections while 35 lakh households will get water connection by 2024.”

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stones of various projects in the Nalbari district and inaugurated some projects. The total cost of these projects is Rs 164 crore. The Chief Minister laid the foundation for construction of roads at a project cost of around Rs 28 crore and setting up four power sub-stations at the cost of Rs 38 crore.

Speaking at the JJM Sanmilan, Sarma said, “Under JJM, 55 litres of water will be provided per person per day. For success of this scheme, we need the cooperation of all stakeholders. The development works taken up by the Assam Government during the last two years have helped the State emerge one of the developed states in the country.”
