GUWAHATI: As many as 42,675 bighas of xatra land and 34,984,423 bighas of government land are under encroachment in the state.

This came to light in Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan’s written reply to a question from MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal in the Assembly today. According to the Revenue Minister, the highest areas of encroached xatra land are in Jorhat district with 42,419 bighas and two kathas; 45 bighas and three kathas in the Barpeta district; 52 bighas in the Kamrup (M) district; 50 bighas and four kathas in the Kamrup district; 5 bighas and four kathas in the Bongaigaon district; four bighas in the Dibrugarh district; and two bighas in the Dhubri district.

According to the minister, government lands are under encroachment in 27 districts, barring the sixth schedule areas. The highest encroachment of government land is in the Tinsukia district with 4,45,201 bighas, followed by 4,09,866 bighas in the Lakhimpur district and 3,00,097 bighas in the Goalpara district.
