GUWAHATI: Altogether 5,82, 242 households failed to get work under MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme), from March 1, 2020 to September 17, 2020.
The MGNREGS is one of the flagship programmes of the Government of India, where various types of employment are provided to job-card holder households if they demand work through the respective local gaon panchayats. According to the Act, such work must be provided within 15 days from the receipt of application from the job-card holder concerned. Such works are basically related to the development of rural areas.
Rural Development Ministry statistics show that 32,66,653 households (of Assam) demanded work under the scheme. However during the mentioned period, only 26,84,411 households were provided work.
The worst scenario was in March 2020 when 7,68,140 households demanded jobs. Of them, while 5,47,670 households got work; 2,20,470 job-card households were not offered any work.
In April, only 23,888 households demanded works under the scheme. Of them, while 21, 438 were offered works; 2,450 households did not get any work.
The breakup data of the remaining period till September 17, 2020, are as follows: May: Applied households: 5,50,299; work offered: 5,03,345; deprived households: 46,954); June: Applied households: 6,53,380; work offered: 6,00,656; deprived households: 52,724); July: Applied households: 4,88,280; work offered: 4,50,404; deprived households: 37,876); August: Applied households: 4,69,863; work offered: 4,29,017; deprived households: 40,846); and September: Applied households: 3,12,803; work offered: 1,31,881; deprived households: 1,80,922).
