GUWAHATI: Identity theft has posed a serious threat to Assam, where fraudsters use other people’s PAN or AADHAAR details fraudulently through GST registration to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC). ‘Input Tax Credit’ or ‘ITC’ means the Goods and Services Tax (GST) paid by a taxable person on any purchase of goods and/or services that are used or will be used for business.

The Central GST Administration has booked as many as 80 cases against fraudulent GST registration by misusing PAN/AADHAAR details of other people from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2023. The Central GST Administration detected Rs 383.03 crore against the 80 cases in Assam and realized Rs 25.39 crore of the amount leading to the arrest of three persons.

In other states in the north-eastern region, Nagaland had eight such cases and Tripura had 12 during the same period.

On the other hand, the Central GST Administration has also registered 250 GST invoice fraud cases from 2018–19 to 2022–23. It detected invoice frauds amounting to Rs 519 crore and realized Rs 129 crore of them. It also arrested four people in that connection.

Arunachal Pradesh has ten GST invoice fraud cases, 19 in Manipur, 30 in Meghalaya, 3 in Mizoram, ten in Nagaland, 30 in Sikkim, and 71 in Tripura.
