GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) and 30 other ethnic organizations of Assam have raised the demand for a special mechanism to enroll the tribal and indigenous people of the State who have been declared ineligible for inclusion in the NRC, without having to face trials in Foreigners Tribunals (FTs). They have also appealed to the Supreme Court of India to make an arrangement for sample re-verification of documents since a large number of Bangladeshis have made it to the final NRC.
The leaders of AASU and 30 other organizations discussed the issue of NRC, the Citizenship Amendment Bill, Clause 6 of the Assam Accord etc., at a meeting here on Friday.
In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, the leaders of the organizations said that the people of Assam have got a faulty NRC because of lacunae on the part of the State government and the Centre. The organizations are not happy with the NRC published on August 31, 2019.
The statement further says that some political parties and organizations have been engaged in vote bank politics on foreigners belonging to Hindus and Muslims, illegally staying in Assam. “Illegal is illegal. There shouldn’t be any politics on that,” the statement said.
The meeting, however, welcomed the stand taken by the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram on the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). “It’s quite clear now that the vote bank comprising illegal Hindu Bengalis is tempting the government to introduce the CAB,” the statement said, and added that the agitation will continue against the Bill that goes against the interest of the indigenous people of the State.
