AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) to Intensify Anti-CAB Stir From November 4

LAKHIMPUR: The AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) will continue its fight against the contentious issues of CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) and big river dams. From November 4, the organization will intensify its agitation against CAB in association with the people of the State in each and every district to prevent the Bill being passed in the Parliament. Besides, the organization will also knock the doors of the Supreme Court against the controversial Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) set up at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district. It stated that the proposed big river dam has been posing devastation threats to the Subansiri River valley in north Assam. Issuing warning to the big river dam lobbies, the organization has announced a series of programmes against the big river dam project across the State.

AASU, the largest students’ organization of the State, took these decisions and resolutions in its four-day-long Jonai general meet that had commenced from October 23. In the delegates meeting held at Friday night in the presence of 2,259 delegates from 27 district committees including the Gauhati and Dibrugarh universities’ units, the organization further called for review of the recently published National Register of Citizens (NRC) to make it error-free. The concluding session of the organization on Saturday also resolved to initiate measures of its own to uplift the poor educational environment and organize an academic convention in this regard. The organization also demanded comprehensive reformations in the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).

The AASU will launch massive agitation programmes at Dhaligaon, Tinsukia and Rangia Railway divisions to refresh its demand for the constitution of a separate Recruitment Board for candidates only from the North East Region (NER) in the different departments of the Railways.

In the open session of the event on Saturday, the dignitaries of the organization reiterated their vows to fight against the sensitive issues confronting the people of Assam and also against the unethical, unconstitutional politics that have been trying to sponsor an environment of hatred and discrimination among the people of the State.

“No force and threat can mute the voice of AASU or weaken its democratic movements initiated for the security of the indigenous people of the State. The government cannot impose the CAB upon us. If it is done, Assam will have to take the path of agitation,” asserted AASU chief adviser Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya. He was taking part in the programme as the appointed speaker. He expressed resentment over the sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border for 34 years. He criticized the successive Union and State governments for their failure to implement the clauses of the Assam Accord. He reiterated the AASU’s demand to immediately implement Clause-VI of the Assam Accord. He further expressed disappointment against the failure of both the governments with regard to a fair and flawless NRC. “We did not get a correct NRC only for the wrong steps and failures of both the governments,” alleged Bhattacharya.

Explaining the objective and view of the event, AASU secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, came down heavily on the State and Union governments “for their U-turns regarding the sentimental issues of the State. A section of public representatives have left no stone unturned to bring segregation in the society of the Assamese community in the name of language and religion. In their attempt to retain power, they are discriminating the Assamese and the Bengalis in the name of language and also the Hindus and the Muslims in the name of religion.”

The AASU leader asserted, “The Assamese community which has been formed with the integration and assimilation of various tribes, castes and communities following different religions and cultures can never be misled by those lobbies having their vested interests. The AASU will also never bow down to them. We have disseminated the message of integration and also taken a strong pledge to protect the indigenous people of Assam.”

Axam Xahitya Xabha President Dr. Parmananda Rajbonshi, former President of Mising Agom Kebang Dr. Bidyeswar Doley including several dignitaries of various communities and indigenous organizations were present in the programme.
