ACS officer suspended for irregularities during recruitment

GUWAHATI: During the rule of the previous government, a recruitment scam in the Assam Fishery Development Corporation Limited (AFDCL) had come to light. It was alleged that rules were violated to regularize the jobs of some employees of the Corporation. The Assam Government today suspended Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Naren Chandra Basumatary for his involvement in the scam.

Naren Chandra Basumatary was the managing director of AFDCL at that time and he is currently serving as the Joint Secretary, Hills Area Department, Government of Assam. More than 200 employees were recruited in AFDCL during the rule of the previous government. Illegal means were allegedly adopted to regularize the jobs of these employees. The government had formed a high-powered committee to probe these allegations. Based on the report of the committee, ACS officer and former managing director of AFDCL, Naren Chandra Basumatary was suspended today.

After getting the approval of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Personnel Department today issued a notification which stated that the high-power committee has reported large-scale irregularities by Naren Chandra Basumatary in “regularizing employees in Assam Fishery Development Corporation Limited (AFDCL) during his stint as managing director”. He has been placed under suspension under Rule 6(1)(a) of the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rule, 1964 with immediate effect. The notification further stated that during the suspension period, the headquarter of Naren Chandra Basumatary will be Guwahati.
