GUWAHATI: Finally, Adani Guwahati International Airport Ltd (AGIAL) took over Lokapyiya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for 50 years from October 7, 2021, midnight amidst widespread protest from various circles.

The symbolic key of the airport was handed over to Utpal Barua, chief airport officer of AGIAL, by Ramesh Kumar, LGBI Director midnight on Thursday.

"Adani Guwahati International Airport Ltd (AGIAL) today took over operations, management and development of #AAI's Guwahati @aaigauairport through PPP model for a lease period of 50 years," the ASAI said in a tweet.

"Our entire team of Guwahati Airport shall always remember the efforts put in to maintain the successful, seamless and safe operations throughout under the able guidance of higher management.

Also grateful to all stakeholders viz airlines, security, customs, immigration, oil companies, GHAs, Assam government, concessionaires, Indian Air Force (IAF) for their valuable support in maintaining safe and secure operations.

"In the initial three years, the new airport operators will be supported by AAI employees," LGBI Airport Director Ramesh Kumar said in a statement here.

Chief Airport Officer AGIAL Utpal Baruah appealed to each individual at the airport and the public at large for wholehearted support to make LGBI Airport a world-class facility that will win pride to the nation.

Earlier today, the Adani Group tweeted: "We are delighted to announce the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is now a 'Gateway to Goodness'. We are privileged to be at your service and welcome all passengers to our airport in Guwahati."

The transfer of operations was not without protests from opposition parties, including the Congress and Assam Jatiya Parishad, besides the AAI employees' unions.
