BISWANATH CHARIALI: As many as 15 Ahom-era silver coins along with a
silver bangle were recovered on the bank of the Dihiri River at Dadhara Amaguri
village of Dhalpur in Lakhimpur district.
According to eminent historian Dr Nityananda Gogoi, a person named Pavitra Gogoi of that village recovered these valuable objects while he was fishing in the river. Dr Gogoi further stated that four coins belonged to the era of Ahom King Rajeswar Singha from 1758 Shaka to 1767 Shaka and the languages encrypted on the coins are Sanskrit and Persi. Five coins belonged to the era of Ahom King Lakshmi Singha's reign in 1700 Shaka and the language is Sanskrit. Two other coins, larger in size, belonged to the era of Jayantiya King Ram Singha dates back to 1630 Shaka. However, one coin went missing.
Ahom kings, counselors and ministers used to wear silver bangles, and this is for the first time that such type of Jayantiya king's coins were recovered in North Assam, he added. The coins are of one rupee, 50 paisa (aadhali) and 25 paisa (shiki) denominations. The use of the Persi language in the Ahom era coins presents the business foresightedness of the Ahom kings and the coins were perhaps used in business transactions in the Mughul Empire, Dr Gogoi claimed.
