AJP blames it on BJP government for volatile situation along Assam-Mizoram border

GUWAHATI: The AJP (Assam Jatiya Parishad) blames it on the State government for the volatile situation prevailing along the Assam-Mizoram boundary.

In a statement issued to the media on Thursday, AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan said, "The people of Mizoram have invaded the Gollasora area in Hailakandi district. The Assam government, however, is silent. People from the neighbouring State burnt over 70 houses into ashes, besides leaving over 50 people injured. Mizos have encroached upon the Kosur Thol area in Hailakandi district."

Bhuyan said, "Earlier, around 1,000 hectares of land was encroached upon by Mizoram in the Gharmur area. Meghalaya has encroached upon 1,138 hectares out of which 99 hectares are in Goalpara district, 640 hectares in Cachar district, 314 bighas in Kamrup (Metro), and 353 hectares in Kamrup district.

"Similarly, due to the weak stand taken by the Assam government, Arunachal Pradesh has encroached upon around 12,000 hectares of land in Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Lakhimpur districts. On the other hand, Nagaland has encroached upon over 62,000 hectares of Assam land."

The AJP stressed that several cases relating to inter-state border disputes are pending at the Supreme Court with Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. However, the BJP government in the State hasn't taken any step towards that end, Bhuyan alleged.

"If the agreement between the Modi government and Nagaland's militant outfit comes into force, Assam's border areas will be in grave danger," Bhuyan added.
