GUWAHATI/BARPETA: An upbeat AJP (Asom Jatiya Parishad) president, Lurinjyoti Gogoi has said that his party is gaining strength every day.

Speaking at a function at the AJP office here on Monday, where 12 persons joined the party, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, "Killing democracy is the reflection of the State government's anti-people policy. The killing of five people during the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation in the State is a glaring example of this."

Former Commissioner to the Government of Assam D.N. Saikia, former Advocate General Kamal Nayan Choudhury, AGP women cell's general secretary Rina Saikia, Assam Pradesh Youth Congress secretary Bonani Priya Rajkonwar are among the 12 persons who joined the party on Monday.

Even during his Barpeta tour on Sunday, Lurinjyoti Gogoi was in a BJP-and-AGP bashing mode.

Announcing that his party would contest all the constituencies in the Assembly election, Gogoi criticized the BJP for "polluting the unity with communal poison" that had been brought about in the State by Srimanta Sankardev. He flayed the AGP for its failure to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people of the State when it was in power.

"Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev united the Assamese people into one thread. And till now we have been following the ideals of our gurus. These ideals have formed our base and life. However, that thread of unity formed hundreds of years ago has been polluted with the poison of communalism. In this crisis period, the unity of the Assamese people and the ideals will encourage us. To keep our unity intact, we should follow our gurus. The AJP will follow the path shown by our gurus," said Lurinjyoti after his prayer at the Barpeta Xatra.

Criticizing the AGP, the AJP president said, "This regional party was born from the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) in 1985. It, however, couldn't fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people of Assam."

Among those who accompanied Lurinjyoti were Jagadish Bhuyan and Dulu Ahmed. They took part at a meeting at the 'Ekta Bhawan' in Dahati. A number of people joined the AJP there.
