DEMOW: The newly-floated AJP (Asom Jatiya Parishad) under the patronage of the AASU and the AJYCP sounded its poll bugle from Sivasagar Boarding Field on Wednesday when the party kick-started its political activities.

Former AASU (All Assam Students' Union) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) MLA Pabindra Deka formally joined the party at the two-day political convention – the first of its kind after the formation of AJP in October this year.

Intellectual Homen Borgohain, educationist Basanta Deka and legal expert Nekibur Zaman were also present at the convention.

Speaking on the occasion, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, "The AJP has been floated under our patronage. It's a target-oriented party to strengthen regional politics in the State. We are going to back it through thick and thin."

AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad) general secretary Palash Changmai said, "The AJP is our brainchild. We're here to support it. We also appeal to the people of the State to lend their support to this regional force. The State is badly in the need of a strong regional force in the true sense of the term."

Interacting with the media before joining the party, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that the AJP is driven by the philosophy of 'Assamese nationalism (Jatiyasetana)'. He added, "The AJP will provide the people of the State a viable alternative."

Already parleys are going on with various other newly-floated regional parties for forging alliance with the AJP to put up a united fight to the ruling coalition in the 2021 Assembly elections.
