GUWAHATI: The All Assam Lawyers’ Association (AALA) has said that it will move the Supreme Court of India against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the interest of the Assamese, their language, literature and culture. Talking to the media in Guwahati on Wednesday, AALA general secretary Dipak Kumar Das said: “We’re going to hold a threadbare discussion on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in our core committee meeting going to be held soon. It will be followed by our executive committee meeting slated to be held on February 3 in Nagaon. We've got a think tank comprising senior advocates. We’ve contacted then for discussion on the Bill.”

Spelling out its agitation schedule advocate Das said: “We’re going to strike in all district and sub-divisional bars in the State on January 11. We appeal to the leaders who had the Assam Agitation as their political launch pad to stage a homecoming when is it not too late. This is an unconstitutional Bill that is set to kill the soul of the Assam Accord. The Constitution of India gives equal rights to all. However, this Bill is going to violate that spirit. Who’ll certify that all those who entered India from the neighbouring countries had to do so due to religious persecution?”
