GUWAHATI: The All Assam Lawyers' Association (AALA) on Tuesday, November 16, held a press conference regarding the exorbitant rise in the price of stamp paper as per the recent amendment of the Indian Stamp (Assam Amendment) Act 2021.

The Association calling the sudden rise in the price of stamp paper 'arbitrary' and 'unconstitutional'. It stated that while the Government needs revenue but an increase of 150 to 4,000 per cent in stamp duty is unacceptable.

"The Maharashtra and Karnataka governments have reduced the stamp duty due to the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. Whereas the Assam government has increased the same, that, too, at such a high rate," said Dipak Kurnar Das, general secretary of AALA. In Assam, the stamp duty has been reduced marginally, 1 per cent in the case of women.

"However, the price rise is arbitrary and unconstitutional without any consideration for the common man," added AALA.
