GUWAHATI: Reiterating its stance against communal and CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act)-supporting forces, the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has decided to appeal to the masses to keep at bay such parties during the Assembly polls.

Talking to The Sentinel here on Sunday, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath added, "This move is part of the tradition of AASU. The organization always appeals to the electorates before any elections – be it Assembly or Parliamentary. This time, we will move the masses not to support the communal and CAA-supporting political forces. This appeal will be formally made public in the meeting of AASU's central executive body slated within a week's time."

Nath added, "AASU can't accept the CAA as it violates the 1985 Assam Accord that was signed after six years of agitation against illegal foreigners in Assam. Besides, more than 855 people of the State became martyrs during this movement."

According to the Accord, March 25, 1971 is the cutoff date to deport the illegal foreigners from the State. But if the CAA is implemented then all the Hindu Bangladeshis who came to Assam up to December 31, 2014 will get citizenship.

"However, some political parties are openly supporting the CAA and carrying on communalism in the name of politics. AASU can never support such forces. Hence, we will appeal to the masses not to support such forces and political parties during the Assembly election."
