GUWAHATI: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Sunday announced to intensify its agitation against the Centre’s move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in the Parliament even as the AASU and 30 ethnic organizations took out torchlight processions across the State against the proposed legislation.

The AJYCP will burn effigies of ruling party MPs and ministers for not taking anti-CAB stand on December 9. The Parishad will support the Assam bandh called by the Chutia Students’ Union on December 9 and the NE bandh called by NESO (North East Students Organisation) on December 10 on the same issue.

On December 12, the AJYCP will take out a “Dispur Chalo” procession in the city with an aim to cripple the functioning of the administration. From the next day (December 13), the AJYCP leaders and activists will visit villages across Assam to create awareness among the people about the “hidden danger” of CAB.

“We have planned to convert the present anti-CAB protests into a massive mass movement. It is a matter of great concern that both the Union government and the State government are unfazed by the State-wide protests by various organizations and the general people alike. Thousands of Assamese people are taking to the streets every day to register their protest against the proposed legislation. The issue, which has posed a threat to the very existence of the indigenous people of Assam, cannot be ignored by the public representatives because of their political ambitions,” Palash Changmai, general secretary of AJYCP said.

Sangmai added that the anti-CAB movement will reach at its climax very soon as the people from all walks of life have come out to the streets.

On other hand, the AASU and 30 ethnic organizations took out torchlight rallies across Assam on Sunday evening. In Guwahati, the top leaders of AASU and the ethnic organizations joined the torchlight procession taken out from Swahid Nyas at Uzan Bazar. The convoy of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal passed through Swahid Nyas before the rally and the protestors showed black flags.

“The CAB is a protector of illegal Bangladeshis, communal, unconstitutional and anti-Assam Accord. Under no circumstance we can support the CAB. The anti-CAB agitation is continuing and will continue in the days to come,” AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath.
