Anurag Goel new Chief Electoral Officer of Assam

GUWAHATI: Following approval from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the State Government today appointed IAS officer Anurag Goel as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam. The Personnel Department issued a notification to this effect today.

The post of CEO had been vacant since former CEO Nitin Kumar Shivdas Khade went on central deputation.

According to rules, approval from the Election Commission of India is a must for the State Government to appoint the State CEO.

In a notification issued on June 6, 2023, the Election Commission said, “…the Election Commission of India, in consultation with the Government of Assam, hereby designates Sri Anurag Goel, IAS (AM: 1996), as the Chief Electoral Officer for the State of Assam with effect from the date he takes charge and until further orders in place of Sri Nitin Kumar Shivdas Khade, IAS.”

The notification of the State Government further said, “Sri Anurag Goel, while functioning as Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, shall not hold any additional charges whatsoever under the Government of Assam except that he should be designated Principal Secretary to the Government in charge of Election Department in the State Secretariat.”

Meanwhile, the State Government shuffled a few of its IAS officers. According to the official notification, the Secretary of Irrigation Department, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (Additional), and State Prabhari Officer (Udalguri), Pabitra Ram Khaund, IAS, was transferred and posted as Principal Secretary-cum-Chief Executive Officer, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Kokrajhar. Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Indira Kalita, IAS, has been relieved of the additional charge of Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary. Joint Secretary, GAD (General Administration Department), Javir Rahul Suresh, IAS, has been transferred and posted as Joint Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, in-charge Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, and Director, Dairy Development, Assam, as additional charges.
