TEA WORKERS BONUS

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The ACMS (Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha) has sought the intervention of the State Government to settle the issue of bonuses in 17 tea gardens.

The management of most tea estates in the state has settled the issue of bonuses with their workers and paved the way for paying them. However, the management of 17 tea gardens in the state has not yet settled the issue of bonuses. The ACMS has complained about Dispur seeking intervention in this regard.

"Barring Apeejay Tea Ltd, most other tea garden managements settled the issue of bonus with their workers. While some tea gardens are paying bonuses in one instalment, some are paying it in two instalments," ACMS general secretary Rupesh Gowala said, talking to The Sentinel today.

We have lodged a formal complaint against Apeejay Tea Ltd with the Principal Secretary, Labourer Welfare Department, Assam. We have also sent copies of the complaint to the Chief Minister and the Labourer Welfare Minister.

"Apeejay Tea Ltd has 17 tea gardens where around 30,000 workers work. These workers are not sure of getting their bonus as their management has not yet settled the issue. Dispur should intervene and settle the issue."

The State Government did urge the tea organizations to pay bonus to tea workers by October 1.

As the tradition goes in Assam, tea managements pay bonus to their workers in the run-up to the Durga Puja.
