Asom Jatiya Parishad moves ECI for registration as a regional party

GUWAHATI: For registration as a regional party, the AJP (Asom Jatiya Parishad) has moved the ECI (Election Commission of India). The party has also decided to simultaneously carry out issue-based political activities and galvanize the party from the grassroots level.

The AJP had its two-day political convention in Sivasagar on December 16 and 17 in the presence of the AASU (All Assam Students Union) and AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chattra Parishad) leaders and members. Former general secretary of AASU Lurinjyoti Gogoi joined the AJP on the first day and he was elected as the party's first president on the concluding day of the convention. The party's central committee was also constituted on the second day.

Talking to The Sentinel, Gogoi said, "We will get a symbol after the ECI registers the Asom Jatiya Parishad as a regional party of Assam. The party will be recognized by the ECI if it gets six per cent of the votes. We believe that the Asom Jatiya Parishad will garner more than this in the 2021 Assembly elections. Our prime objective is to constitute a strong and viable regional front in Assam. The AJP may field candidates in all the 126 Assembly constituencies."

Referring to the political strategy of AJP, he pointed out, "This front will not have any truck with either the communal forces or those regional parties that are having alliance with the BJP and the Congress. However, the AJP may consider tie-up with a regional political party if it chooses to opt out of such alliances."

On the AJP blueprint, Gogoi said, "Since there is less than three months for the ECI notification on the Assembly polls in Assam, we have already buckled up our straps. The party workers are working on a war footing on two fronts. The first aspect is to strengthen the party right from the grassroots level; and the second is to carry forward the aspirations of the masses from a robust political platform.

"The State's burning issues will be our prime focus. We firmly oppose the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), price hike and construction of big dams. On the other hand, the party demands early implementation of the Assam Accord in a time-bound manner and a permanent solution to the flood and erosion problems in the State."
