GUWAHATI: The State and the Central governments should initiate immediate robust measures to promote the Xattriya culture nationally and internationally. The umbrella organisation of the neo-Vaishnavite culture in Assam — the 'Asom Sattra Mahasabha' (ASM) — also stated that the beginning in this regard can be initiated from the 'Cultural Centres' that can be set up in prime locations across the country.
The general secretary of ASM further requested Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure that "elaborate chapters" on both Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and Mahapurush Srimanta Madhabdev should be incorporated in the curriculum at the school level. "This has become necessary at the present juncture so that the up-and-coming generation are well acquainted with the Xattriya culture of Assam. There should also be vibrant talks and seminars as well as various academic pursuits in this aspect at various levels."
Talking to The Sentinel, ASM general secretary Kusum Kumar Mahanta further said on Monday, "The move should also promote the 'Xattriya Nritya', which encapsulates the ethos of the 'Ek-saran Dharma'.
"The Government of India accorded national recognition to the 'Xattriya Nritya' in 2000. It was possible owing to the continuous efforts of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who was the Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi at that time."
Mahanta added, "It's a positive development that many cultural connoisseurs from abroad have been showing interest in our 'Xattriya Nritya' and also the culture.
"The ball is now in the court of the authorities concerned. Let us explore all the possibilities to make Xattriya Culture a global phenomenon.
"It can be a time-consuming affair. But it can be possible, and we can make it possible with joint concerted phasewise efforts.
"In the first phase, cultural centres can be established wherever the Assam Bhawans/ Assam Houses are already functioning. We appeal to the Cultural Affairs Department to take the maiden step in this laudable inititative."
Mahanta also urged the State government to revive the cultural centre at Puri in Odissa.
