Assam: 133 villages underwater despite fall in water level

GUWAHATI: Despite the fall in the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, 133 villages in seven districts still reel under water in the state. Rainwater has inundated a vast area in the KNP (Kaziranga National Park), affecting around 11 forest camps.

The deluge has affected 58,486 people. The district-wise breakup is: 25,752 in Lakhimpur, 15,870 in Biswanath, 13,247 in Chirang, 2,745 in Dhemaji, and 70 in Tamulpur. A total of 375 inmates are taking shelter in 38 relief camps. The damage to embankments, roads, and other infrastructure goes on unabated.

According to official sources, the KNP authority is ready to sound a high alert, and boats are ready to deal with the flood situation in the national park. The 40 highlands in the park are very helpful for the animals to take shelter during floods. Vigilance has been intensified along the national highway near the park to ensure that speeding vehicles do not harm the animals crossing the road. Timecards have been installed along the national highway to check the speed limits of vehicles.
