CM, AASU to discuss clause-wise implementation of pact today
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: A key meeting on the 'Assam Accord-1985' will be held between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and representatives of the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) on Tuesday (September 7, 2021). The State government has already sent the invitation letter to the AASU.
The talks in the premises of State Guest House at Koinadhara here will commence from 3 pm.
Significantly, Tuesday's bilateral meeting has been scheduled after 16 long years since the last meeting between the Chief Minister of Assam and the AASU on the implementation of the tripartite Assam Accord signed in New Delhi.
The last bilateral discussion on the Accord in the State was held with the then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on May 2, 2005.
Mentionably, the historically significant tripartite pact was signed by the representatives of AASU, the Government of India and also the Government of Assam. The pact brought to conclusion the six-year-long anti-foreigners movement in the State. Mentionably, more than 860 persons became martyrs during this movement.
Talking to The Sentinel, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said on Monday, "Many clauses of the Assam Accord are yet to be implemented. During Tuesday's meeting, AASU will seek clause-wise implementation of the Accord in a time-bound manner."
The AASU leader added, "We feel that the State government can refer to the Union government those clauses which fall outside its purview. This is possible as the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) is the nodal Ministry for implementation of the Assam Accord."
