GUWAHATI: The state Department of School Education has issued a directive asking all school students to sing the state anthem during the morning assembly on the occasion of the 159th birthday celebration of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua on October 14.

The recent order issued by the Department of School Education says that the students of all schools under it should sing the state anthem ‘O Mor Aponer Desh’ during the morning assembly ‘in order to celebrate the 159th birth anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua on October 14, 2023.’

The decision for the singing of the state anthem by school students on the occasion was taken during a meeting of the Joint Committee for Celebration of the 159th Birth Anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua on October 14, 2023. Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah presided over the meeting held on September 22, 2023.

Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua was born on October 14, 1864, at Aahatguri in the Morigaon district. He is considered the greatest poet, novelist, and playwright of modern Assamese literature during the age of romanticism. He was one of the literary stalwarts of the Jonaki Era, the age of romanticism in Assamese literature. Through his essays, plays, fiction, poetry, and satires, he gave a new impetus to the then stagnating Assamese literary movement.

Responding to the prevailing social environment of Assam, he brought and sustained positive changes to it through his satirical works. His literature is celebrated as a reflection of the deeper urges of the people of Assam.

There was confusion regarding the date of birth of Bezbarua, and he himself admitted to it in his autobiography, Mor Jiban Xuworo. Bezbarua, however, himself confirmed in his auto-biography that he was born in the autumn on a full moon night, on which ‘Lakshmi Puja’ (a Hindu festival of worship of Goddess Lakshmi) is celebrated in India, and to mark the coincidence of his birth date, he was named by his parents as “Lakshminath” (a name for Vishnu, the Hindu God and husband of Goddess Lakshmi).

This festival in autumn is celebrated on the full moon of Ashvin, which usually falls in the month of October in any year. Presently, the Axam Xahitya Xabha settled on the date of October 14, 1864, which was a full moon night in Lakshmi Puja in India, to mark his date of birth.
