GUWAHATI: The Congress MLAs created an unruly situation on the floor of the State Assembly today over the alleged misuse and irregularities of central funds meant for the development of minority areas in the state.

Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said that the utilization of central funds meant for the development of minority areas in the state needed a thorough review. The Congress MLAs alleged that, right from students' scholarships to various other welfare schemes for minorities, there were anomalies in their implementation. The department concerned, as the MLAs alleged, could not submit utilisation certificates for a huge amount of such central funds.

Minority Welfare and Development Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, "The CID is investigating the alleged anomalies, and they have already arrested some people. We have also asked the district commissioners to submit the utilization certificates to the Centre."

Not satisfied with the reply from the minister, the Congress MLAs staged a walkout.
