GUWAHATI: To overhaul the Assam Police the State Cabinet today decided to set up a police commission. The commission will recommend measures for improvement of the policing system, their activities and deployment in the state. The commission headed by retired IAS Himangshu Sekhar Das and former DGP PV Suman will submit their recommendations to the government within three months. Both Das and Suman will get the status of the Chief Secretary.

The other decisions of the Cabinet are –

(i) The filling up 15,000 vacant posts in the Assam police from September 1, 2021.

(ii) The creation of five new Assam Police battalions that will absorb 6,270 youths.

(iii) Attaching the Printing and Stationery Department with the Department of Information and Public Relations.

(iv) Attaching the Public Enterprises Department with Industries and Commerce department.

(v) Attaching the Passport Department with the Department of Home.

(vi) Enhancing the monthly sports pension from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000.

(vii) Sports pension to the medal winners of Commonwealth and National Games.

(viii) Medal winners of Olympics, Commonwealth and Asian Games will get class I government jobs, medal winners of recognized world championships will get class II jobs.

(ix) Appointment of Dr PLN Raju, who retired as the Director of Northeast Space Application Centre (NSAC), as the Special Secretary-cum-Director of the Regional Space Application Centre (RSAC).

(x) Waiver of land premium of Sankardev Nethralaya, Guwahati.
