GUWAHATI: Nine hundred and sixty-seven wards of 80 municipal boards of the state will go to the polls today. A total of 2,532 candidates will vie for their luck.
According to official sources, a tight security bandobast is in place for smooth civic body polls. It is the first municipal board poll in the state with EVMs (electronic voting machines) instead of ballot papers. Total voters in the 80 municipal boards is 16,73,899 – 8,32,349 males, 8,41,534 females and 17 third gender. The municipal board polls in the state were due in March 2020. However, the election was deferred because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this poll, alliance partners AGP and BJP are contesting against each other in many wards. Around 60 candidates won unopposed.
