GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi today for the complete withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state.

According to the last MHA notification, eight districts of Assam tagged as disturbed areas have this Act in force. The last MHA notification withdrew AFSPA from the Lakhipur subdivision of the Cachar district. The draconian Act was also withdrawn from a few districts in the state earlier.

The Chief Minister did lay stress on the complete withdrawal of the AFSPA from the state by the end of this year in his Independence Day speech.

After meeting the Union Home Minister, the Chief Minister wrote on X, “I met Hon’ble Union Home Minister @AmitShah ji at his residence today to discuss the roadmap for the complete withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Assam. The Government of Assam will take further steps based on the suggestions of the Hon’ble Home Minister.”

The eight districts of Assam where the AFSPA is still in force are Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao.

The Chief Minister also met with the BJP’s national president, JP Nadda. After the meeting with Nadda, the Chief Minister wrote on X, “It was a privilege to meet and receive guidance and blessings from Adarniya Adhyaksh ji during my visit to New Delhi today. I had the opportunity to brief him on the numerous welfare initiatives our state government is undertaking.”
