GUWAHATI: Taking a tough stand against extortion in the name of ULFA (real or fake), State DGP GP Singh said that the State police force would not tolerate such activities that hindered the economic development of the state.

The DGP said on social media that some businessmen in upper Assam have already received letters demanding money from the banned organization ULFA (real or fake). “Police have arrested some people related to this kind of money collection. One person was shot at and injured today while trying to escape after attacking a policeman. So it is informed that this type of ULFA (real or fake) is accused of violating Sections 17, 21, 24, 26, 39, and 40 of the UAP (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Law since ULFA is a banned terrorist organization. The sections of this law apply to organizing crimes like the collection of funds and the use of collected money for terrorist activities. The accused, who collect money in the name of ULFA (real or fake), may also have their property confiscated. Concerned district police and security forces have already been ordered to take strict action against such accused,” the DGP said.

Meanwhile, ULFA-I said in a statement that the persons reported to have collected money in the name of ULFA were not their cadres.
