GUWAHATI: Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana, GOC of Gajraj Corps, formally announced the training of Assam Police commandos by the Indian Army by addressing and encouraging the newly-recruited trainees at Narangi Cantonment here on Friday.
The state government has recruited 2,570 trainees and is raising five new commando battalions.
The Indian Army is undertaking the training of the Assam Police commandos at seven different locations. The trainees include 2,282 men and 288 women. The basic military and advanced training – which began on November 21 last - will be carried out for 40 weeks by qualified instructors of the Army.
Addressing the trainees, Lieutenant General Rana highlighted the importance of quality training being imparted by the Indian Army to assist the future custodians of law and order in dealing with any situation. He complimented the trainees for getting selected through a rigorous selection procedure and exhorted them to always adhere to the motto of Assam Police "Always at Your Service".
The inaugural ceremony of Assam Police training was attended by various military and civil dignitaries including Major General S Murugesan, GOC of Indian Army's formation at Rangia, KV Singh Deo, Special DGP (Prosecution and BIEO), BK Mishra, ADGP (OSD), Munna Prasad Gupta, ADGP (Administration/ M&L), Nitul Gogoi, IGP(Administration), Randeep Barua (AIG-T) and other dignitaries.
It may be mentioned that the Indian Army and the Assam Police have been jointly operating against the insurgents in the state since the 1990s. These joint operations have played a major role in bringing normalcy to a very large extent in the state.
