Assam Directorate of Higher Education warns colleges of disciplinary action

UG admission turns clumsier

GUWAHATI: The clumsy situation in admission into undergraduate (UG) programmes in the colleges and universities arising out of the last-moment launch of the centralized admission portal, Samarth, still continues in the state. Apart from students, the colleges are also in troubled waters.

The last-minute admission guidelines from the Directorate of Higher Education confused some colleges, let alone the students and their guardians. The situation has come to such a pass that the Directorate of Higher Education had to warn that if any college violates the advisories regarding UG admission, they would face disciplinary action.

Most of the students and their guardians are a confused lot with the NEP-2020 (National Education Policy) with four-year degree courses involving eight semesters against three-year degree courses involving six semesters introduced in the universities and colleges for the first time this year.

The launch of the centralized admission portal, Samarth, has further confused a section of students and their guardians, and that has led them to apply in an erroneous manner. This led the Directorate of Higher Education to issue repeated advisories for the students and the colleges, besides rescheduling the admission timeline twice.

According to the last revised timeline, the colleges were to publish their first merit lists on July 11. However, the Directorate issued the detailed advisory for admission into the UG course on July 11 only. The advisory made the point that the colleges would publish the merit lists but not the waiting lists. However, several colleges published the waiting lists along with the first merit lists, complicating the situation even further. When this came to the attention of the Directorate, it had to issue a fresh notice with a piece of warning.

The notice said, "It has come to our attention that some colleges are violating the notifications and advisory issued by the undersigned (Director of Higher Education) in publishing the merit list. Some colleges are publishing 'merit lists' as well as 'waiting lists' beyond the seat capacity sanctioned by the university. Hence, the institutions complying with the notification cannot be put to any disadvantage in the UG admissions. All notifications and advisory letters have already been mailed to the institutions for necessary information and action. Therefore, all the colleges are advised to strictly follow the notifications and admission advisory issued in regard to UG admissions and make necessary changes to the published lists, limiting the seats only to the sanctioned seats. Strict cognizance is taken in the deviations from the notifications and advisory of the government, and disciplinary action, as per rules, will be initiated for non-compliance of government instructions."
