Flood scene grim; toll rises to 84 l 25,29,312 persons of 2,400 villages affected

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Sunday with five more persons dead taking the toll to 84. Meanwhile, the main rivers and their tributaries were flowing above the danger level at various places across the State. Personnel of NDRF, SDRF and the respective district administration are carrying out rescue operations at various places.
Flood-related casualties have been reported from Baghbar in Barpeta district; Baganpara in Baksa district; Bilasipara in Dhubri district; Mayong in Morigaon district; and Kaliabor in Nagaon district.
While the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in Jorhat, Tezpur in Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dhubri; Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat district; Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur district; Kopili at Dharamtul in Nagaon district; Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta district; Kushiyara in Karimganj; and the Sankosh at Golokganj in Dhubri district.
Altogether 24 out of the 33 districts of the State have been affected during the last 24 hour, said the daily bulletin of ASDMA.
The flood-affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Cachar.
As many as 25,29,312 persons of 2,400 villages/ localities in 70 Revenue Circles have been affected. Altogether 50,559 persons have taken shelter in 301 relief camps. Altogether 220 relief distribution centres have been set up.
Total crop area affected is 1,12,138.99 hectares.
A total of 10,12,235 big animals have been affected besides 6,35,068small animals and 9,37,991 poultry have been affected till Sunday evening.
Embankments, roads and bridges/culverts have been breached at many places. Erosion has been reported from various places in Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Majuli and Chirang districts.
While 45 camps have been affected in Kaziranga National Park, six others have been vacated across the Park. On the other hand, while 108 Park animals have died, 135 others have been rescued till date. In Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, while 12 camps have been affected; four have been shifted.
