Assam: Flood situation deteriorates

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the state deteriorated further in the past 24 hours. Now, the Chirang district has also come under the grip of floods. Apart from the Brahmaputra, the Disang River is also flowing above its danger level.

According to a report from the CWC (Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger levels at Neamatighat in the Jorhat district and the Disang River at Nanglamuraghat in the Sivasagar district. The Brhamaputra is maintaining the rising trend in Tezpur, Goalpara, and Dhubri. Three lower Assam rivers-the Beki, Gaurang, and Sonkosh-and the Jia-Bharali in North Assam have been maintaining rising trends.

According to the ASDMA, as many as 103 villages in four districts-Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, and Chirang-are under the grip of floods in the state, affecting 55,808 people.

Reports of damage to infrastructure, including the Saktola embankment at Sipajhar in the Darrang district, came in.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, predicted light to moderate rainfall in almost all areas of Assam, including heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few other places in the state. The two places-Gossaigaon and Fakiragram-witnessed the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours in the state.
