GUWAHATI: Following heavy rainfall in several parts of the state over the past 24 hours, flood waters engulfed large areas in four districts: Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Kamrup, and Kamrup (Metro), affecting more than 4,000 people. Urban flooding was witnessed in the Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) districts.

According to the flood bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday evening, 20 villages in six revenue circles of the four districts were hit by floods, which also inundated 218.70 hectares of crop land and affected 1895 animals, both big and small.

The district administrations in Dhemaji and Sivasagar opened a total of five relief camps and relief distribution centres, even as a total of 168 people took shelter in the two relief camps in the Sivasagar district.

Damage to infrastructure in several districts was also reported, with dykes and roads eroded by the flood waters in Darrang, Dibrugarh, Kamrup (M), Karbi Anglong, and Tinsukia districts. Irrigation canals, fisheries, and ponds also sustained damage in Goalpara and Sivasagar districts.

In Guwahati, an incident of rock slide was reported from the Hengerabari area of the city, while a guard wall collapsed in Narakasur, Kahilipara, posing danger to the residents. Notices to evacuate their homes were served to several residents in the area as the danger of landslides continued.

Following incessant rains, urban flooding was reported in village Rahdhala, Abhaypur, under the North Guwahati Municipal Board, and in the Rajgarh and Maligaon areas of the city.

However, no rivers in the state were flowing above the danger or highest flood level, as per a CWC bulletin issued at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
