GUWAHATI: The State Government will start paying Rehabilitation Grants (RG) in a big way by spending over Rs 200 crore for houses damaged in the floods this year. The government is now paying Gratuitous Relief (GR) for utensils and clothes by spending Rs 72 crore.

Rehabilitation Grants from the SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund) are for property damage in floods, including damage to houses. According to the preliminary estimates, the floods damaged around 16,700 houses fully and 1.11 lakh houses partially. However, the number of damaged residences may go up in the final estimation that is currently underway. The two successive waves of floods this year affected 34 of the 35 districts of the state.

According to official sources, the government will send Rehabilitation Grants to the beneficiaries through DBT (Direct Bank Transfer). The Rehabilitation Grant for a fully-damaged and severely-damaged house is Rs 95,100, and that of a partially damaged house is Rs 5,200.

Talking to The Sentinel, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan said, "The government is standing beside the affected people in the post-flood period. Honourable Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the flood-affected people should get rehabilitation grants from the SDRF for fully-damaged, severely-damaged and partially-damaged houses. The final estimation is going on. According to the preliminary estimation, we need over Rs 200 crore for paying rehabilitation grants."
