Flood water inundates parts of KNP and Pobitora

GUWAHATI: Even as the overall flood situation in the state remained unchanged, flood waters inundating parts of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary are a cause for concern.
The Brahmaputra, Disang, Dikhow, and Buridehing are still flowing above their danger levels in many areas of the state. The worst-affected district in the State is Sivasagar, where NDRF personnel are conducting rescue operations. The floods affected around 88,911 people in 392 villages in 16 districts in the state. The affected districts are Dhemaji, Majuli, Sivasagar, Morigaon, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Darrang, Barpeta, etc.
Flood water inundates 63 of the 223 forest camps in the KNP. Forest personnel patrol the national park with boats.
According to official sources, the situation is not yet critical, and the Forest Department is keeping a close watch on the safety of wildlife. “When there is flooding in the KNP, the animals cross the national highway and go to the Karbi hills. There is strict vigilance along the national highway in the foothills to keep poachers at bay. The animals also take shelter in the 40 highlands inside the national park. So far, two hog deer have died in the floods. Speeding vehicles ran over a python that was crossing the national highway,” an official source said.
Meanwhile, the surging water of the Brahmaputra entered the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and inundated its area by around 20 percent. The animals are taking shelter in some highlands.
