GUWAHATI: With a view to halt the threat posed to climate change by the use of single-use plastic proliferation, the Government of Assam has issued a notification banning it. The Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Secretariat Administration (Nazarat) Department has stated in the order that the State government has decided to create awareness against the hazards of single-use plastic and explore sustainable alternative.

It has also adopted stringent steps to curb single-use plastic in the premises of Janata Bhawan with immediate effect. Among materials banned are those made of thermocol, plastic spoon, fork, cups, glass, cling film, ketchup/sauce or any other sachet, straws, and plates. These are banned in the meetings and conferences as well. The order, however, allowed alternate materials like water dispensers with paper cups, which do not cause serious harm to environment.

In its notification issued earlier, the Environment and Forest Department had already given certain directions for imposing the ban on manufacture, import, supply, sale and use of plastic carry-bags, plastic sheets, and multilayered packaging of less than 50 microns. The ban also extends to plastic cups with diameter less than 60 mm and thickness less than 50 microns; short-life PVC and all chlorinated plastic bags, sheets, banners, flex, buntings, and flags irrespective of thickness.
