GUWAHATI: Concerned over the slow pace of AADHAAR enrollment, the State government has directed the private firms to buckle up their straps. The government has further warned that if they fail to do so, their contracts will be terminated.
Talking to The Sentinel, GAD (General Administration Department) Commissioner Secretary M.S. Manivannan said, "We have already given them the direction during a review meeting with the firms engaged in the enrollment process. The errant firms have been also issued the warning."
He added, "As on date, around 60,000 AADHAAR enrollments are being carried out daily. We are trying to achieve the target of 2 lakh enrollments daily. The Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have been directed to mobilize additional human resources and machinery in this regard. The UDAI ('Unique Identification Authority of India) will provide the technical support. Funds have been also released to the firms."
Taking into consideration the huge rush for AADHAAR enrollment and to also speed up the process speedier, Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal had instructed the GAD to initiate the steps in this direction.
Across Assam, six private firms are carrying out AADHAAR enrollment under GAD. There are 1,905 AADHAAR biometric-collection machines.
While the process is carried out under the UIDAI, the GAD is the State Registrar for Assam.
The free AADHAAR card is mandatory to get benefits of various Central schemes. At present, only 30 per cent of the estimated 3.30 crore population across the State have AADHAAR cards.
