ULFA's unilateral ceasefire is a good sign: CM

GUWAHATI: Reiterating his call for peace to ULFA 'commander-in-chief' Paresh Baruah, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the ceasefire declared by the outfit is not in consultation with the government. He said that if there is a bilateral ceasefire there's a need to frame certain ground rules to be honoured by both parties.

Talking to the media on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said, "The ceasefire announced by the ULFA is a unilateral one on certain subjects. They didn't have any discussion with the Government on it. In unilateral ceasefire, if any ULFA member roams about with arms in hand, the security personnel will have to take action on them.

"Be that as it may, the unilateral ceasefire declared by the ULFA is a good sign. If the ULFA wants to join the peace process, the Government is always ready. However, before that, the process has to have the official tag from both parties. Peace move should come through the proper channel. Tranquillity is a must.

"When there are formal talks, several issues will crop up. However, there will be limitations for each of the two sides. Both sides will have to honour each others' limitations in the interest of a fruitful dialogue.

"The message from the people of the State now is loud and clear – they don't want any killing and violence. In sync with the people's wish, the government wants to put an end to all violence once and for all, and make stride to a new direction."
