Assam Government: Pattas For 1 Lakh More Indigenous Landless People on Cards

GUWAHATI: Keeping with the Assam government’s commitment to provide land rights to the indigenous people of Assam, one lakh land pattas would be distributed this fiscal. To be issued in two phases, 44,000 indigenous people will get the pattas within November. The files regarding these pattas have already been cleared by the respective Deputy Commissioners.

The remaining 56,000 pattas would be distributed within March 31, 2020. During the last financial year, 12,000 indigenous people availed of the land pattas.

A land patta, is also referred to as ‘Record of Rights’. This legal document issued by the Government includes the details of the legal owner of the land property/plot or the person in whose name the property is registered at the registrar’s office. It can also be issued for lands having buildings or individual houses etc.

Notably after the present BJP-led dispensation has taken over the reins in Dispur, it has noticed that thousands of indigenous people have been settling at various places across the State. However, they were not having any rights over those lands as they were not possessing land documents. Hence, the State government decided to carry out a survey of such indigenous landless people so that official land documents could be issued to them.

Talking to The Sentinel, State Revenue Minister Bhabesh Kalita said, “The thrust of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been to expedite the entire process of issuing land pattas to the landless indigenous people of Assam.”

Minister Kalita added, “Without the pattas, these indigenous people were unable to avail of various government welfare schemes. This age-old logjam has now been removed.”
