GUWAHATI: The State Government will soon carry out a 'social audit' whereby its ambitious scheme 'Orunodoi' will be reviewed during a to-be-announced 'Orunodoi Month'.
There are around 20 lakh women beneficiaries in the State under this scheme, who are receiving Rs 1,000 on the 10th day of every month through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
The State Government has taken a policy decision to increase the number of beneficiaries by 5,000 in each of the 126 Assembly constituencies of Assam. The 'social audit' during the ensuing 'Orunodoi Month' will help identify the new beneficiaries. Moreover, the audit will also verify whether the economic condition of any existing beneficiary has improved during the pendency of the scheme. If such beneficiaries are identified, then they will become ineligible for the scheme and their names will be removed from the list of beneficiaries.
When the scheme was originally launched on October 2, 2020, around 17 lakh beneficiaries received financial assistance of Rs 830 per month. Later, this amount was increased to Rs 1,000 per month. The Government proposes to provide an additional amount of Rs 250 per month to each beneficiary as subsidy for 50 units of electricity, which will be directly be credited into the bank account concerned.
The Government has earmarked Rs 2,000 crore for the scheme for the current fiscal year since Orunodoi is one of the prime women-centric flagship programmes of the BJP-led State Government. It is aimed at strengthening Assam's economy through economic empowerment of women and enhancement of financial literacy.
