Assam Flood Relief Fund Released: The Assam Government has released an amount of Rs 75 crore as an advance to be used for providing gratuitous relief to people who could be affected by floods in the Assam State. The money has been sanctioned by the Revenue and Disaster Management (R&DM) Department.
The money is now to be properly utilised by the Deputy Commissioners and Sub-Divisional Officers (Civil) in each of the 34 districts and subdivisions of the State.
The state Assam is yet to see any flood-related calamity this year. The government considers May 15 to September 15 as the period when floods wreak havoc in different parts of Assam. The maximum amount of Rs 3 crore lakh each has been given to Nalbari, Nagaon, Golaghar, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Barpeta, Sonitpur and South Salmara.
In 2020, at least 124 people lost their lives and over 30 lakh people were affected due to floods. Flood is a perennial calamity that causes extensive damage to lives, livelihoods, properties, cattle and agriculture in the State. The newly-sworn in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised to make Assam flood-free.
