GUWAHATI: In a bid to offer respite to the hundreds of people affected in the annual floods, the Assam government has decided to construct shelter homes for the flood-affected people in the flood-prone areas of the State. Two such homes are set to come upon a pilot basis at two of the most flood-affected districts of Lakhimpur and Majuli.
These shelter homes will be constructed above the highest flood level in the respective locations. Each of these homes will have a capacity to shelter 500 inmates. The PWD (Building) has been directed to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The decision to this effect was taken at the last meeting of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in the presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Notably, the project has been okayed after the ASDMA took into account the data of the flood-affected areas during the last 17 years.
Talking to The Sentinel, State Project Coordinator of ASDMA Minakshi Das Nath said, “This is Assam government’s own initiative. The entire expenditure of the project will be borne by the State government from its own resources.”
