GUWAHATI: The State Government has decided to create a new department – the Department of Indigenous Faith and Culture – to preserve and protect the moribund faiths and cultures of the indigenous communities.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the faiths, cultures, traditions like Bathou Puja of the Bodos, Karma Puja of the Adivasis and Tea Tribes etc., of the indigenous communities of the state are moribund. "We need to preserve and protect them. The very purpose of the new department is to preserve them," he said.

The Chief Minister further said, "We've urged Finance Minister Ajanta Neog to allocate substantial funds for the new department in the coming Budget. We've already started the merger of analogous departments. We've merged the Pension and Public Grievances Department with the Department of Administrative Reforms and Training. More such departments are in the pipeline for the merger."

Amidst the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and preparations for floods, the State Government has completed two months in office.

The Chief Minister said, "During the two months, our ministers have scripted a record of maximum visits to the districts. The ministers' frequent visits have let us know various grievances of the public. It will help us to address the grievances.

"We've appointed guardian ministers to make their direct communication with the district administrations possible. It will help us to sort out problems. Earlier also there were in-charge ministers. However, those ministers seldom visited the districts of which they were in-charges."
