GUWAHATI: The State Government has decided to erect 50 BOPs (border outposts) in phases along its borders with the neighbouring states.
Along with resolving the existing inter-state border disputes, the State government is also taking measures to protect the state's boundary through the erection of BOPs. The state has 103 BOPs along its inter-state borders at present. And the government feels that the 103 BOPs are inadequate to protect its inter-state boundaries.
According to State Border Protection Department sources, the department will erect 8 BOPs along the Nagaland border, 18 BOPs along the Arunachal border, 11 along the Meghalaya border, two along the West Bengal border and 11 along the Mizoram border. The proposed 50 BOPs will be in 19 districts of Assam, sharing borders with the neighbouring states. The districts are Karbi Anglong, South Salmara-Mankachar, Tinsukia, Udalguri, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, West Karbi Anglong, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup, Dima Hasao, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Kamrup (M), Karimganj and Cachar.
The year-wise plan of the department is to erect 20 BOPs in 2022-23, 20 in 2023-24 and ten in 2024-25.
According to statistics of the Assam Government, 59490 hectares of Assam land is under encroachment by people from Nagaland, 16144 hectares by people from Arunachal Pradesh, 3441 hectares by people from Meghalaya and 3675 hectares by people from Mizoram.
However, after coming to power, the present dispensation in Assam has started a process to resolve boundary disputes with its neighbouring states.
