GUWAHATI: The State Government is going to evaluate the performance of its superintendents of police (SPs). The performance appraisal reports of the SPs will form the basis of their annual confidential reports (ACRs).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the SPs of the state that the government would evaluate their performances at the SP conference slated for June this year. “Fifty indices from the last four SPs’ conferences will be marked out as the yardstick for the evaluation of their performances,” he said.
The Chief Minister discussed the backlog of pending cases, drug-related crimes, crimes against women, cybercrimes, withdrawal of petty cases, etc. He said, “Every SP will be given fixed, reasonable targets to achieve, and their performances will be evaluated on this basis. SPs need to work actively for improving the law-and-order parameters for the overall improvement in the law-and-order situation.”
Concerned over crimes against women, the Chief Minister said, “We need to adopt the practices followed by the states that have shown good results in checking crimes against women.”
On smart policing, the Chief Minister said, “Smart policing is for the betterment of the existing policing system. We need a police force that is strict and sensitive, modern and mobile, alert and accountable, reliable and responsive, techno-savvy, and trained to tackle any kind of internal security problem they may be confronted with.”
He suggested the police force focus on a swift and pragmatic approach while dealing with crimes, including registering cases and bringing them to a logical conclusion. “Every complaint must be registered and inquired about,” he said.
He further said, “A robust and resilient force is the need of the hour with a high state of fitness that can reach the scenes of crimes in a jiffy and combat the situations. The process is underway to offer VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) to around 250 police personnel who are no longer fit to be in the force.”
