Assam government to launch Orunodoi 2.0 in April 2023, to cover 27.61 lakh beneficiaries

GUWAHATI: The State government will launch Orunodoi 2.0 in April 2023 with a plan to cover around 27.61 lakh beneficiaries. It is the revised form of the Oronodoi Scheme.

According to Orunodoi rules, the Government makes payments on the tenth of every month in DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) mode to the beneficiaries. The Government plans to make the first Orunodoi 2.0 payment through DBT mode on April 10, 2023.

The then Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, now Chief Minister, announced the Orunodoi scheme, described as the 'foremost bead' among the Ashtadash Mukuta Unnoyonee Maala, in his 2020-21 Budget speech.

The Government launched this scheme before the 2021 Assembly election in the state. This women-centric scheme got the tag of the highest-ever state-run scheme in the DBT mode to alleviate poverty, etc.

Originally, the Government paid Rs 830 per month to each beneficiary. After two revisions, the amount now stands at Rs 1,250 per month per beneficiary. A review of the list of beneficiaries last year detected ineligible beneficiaries besides beneficiaries whose financial conditions have improved. That shrank the eligible beneficiaries to 17.07 lakh from its original 19 lakhs.

Under Orunodoi 2.0, the Government has planned to add 10.57 lakh more beneficiaries to have 27.61 lakh beneficiaries finally.

The selection of beneficiaries under Orunodoi 2.0 is going on now. The State Government will have to spend over Rs 4,000 crore annually under the scheme. The beneficiaries covered under Orunodoi 2.0 are women above 18 years of old, transgender, Divyangjans, and all existing beneficiaries of the Deen Dayal Divyangjan Pension Scheme and Indira Miri Universal Widow Pension Scheme. The Finance Department runs the scheme.
