GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has decided to set up five educational institutions, especially for construction workers.

At a meeting on the utilisation of cess funds of the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (ABOCWWB) last night, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the fund position and its utilisation in the presence of State Labour Welfare Minister Sanjay Kishan and senior officials of the department. The Chief Minister directed officials of the department to set up five educational institutions in five regions of the state for the families of the construction workers and their families, in collaboration with the Education Department and Public Works Department. He also said that the Labour and Welfare Department, Public Works Department, and Education Department will sign a tripartite agreement for the establishment of the five educational institutions.

According to sources, the cost of the educational institutions will come from the unutilized Cess fund of the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (ABOCWWB) of the Labour Welfare Department, and the Education Department will bear the operational cost of the institutions. The Rs 500 crore unutilized cess fund of the Board will be parked for the establishment of educational institutions. As per the initial plan, the educational institutions shall have 50 percent reserved seats for the construction workers and their families.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Minister Sanjay Kishan said, "We utilize the Cess fund of the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board for the welfare of labourers. We are going to use the unspent fund under the ABOCWWB for the setting up of five educational institutions in five different zones and other purposes in phases."

According to sources, the Educational Department will decide the locations of the five schools.
